Abstract

This research assessed the interplay between Lean Production, Industry 4.0, and Circular Economy, aiming to fill gaps in the literature through the analysis of their mutual relationships. The scientific community has investigated both each individual paradigm and their combination, discovering that Industry 4.0 and Lean Production technologies act as accelerators for the ecological transition in businesses and, moreover, mutually support each other. Scientific studies have allowed for a theoretical understanding of the benefits derived from the application of these paradigms. However, a solid and concrete exploration of the economic, social, and environmental advantages resulting from the simultaneous application of all three has been lacking. Therefore, the goal of this study was to propose a model from which manufacturing companies can enable a process toward circular transition. The study was conducted through a systematic review of existing literature, associated with the 3 paradigms and their interconnections. The bibliometric review of literature allowed the analysis of scientific research to delve into the interplay of the three areas, visualizing the main path to understanding the evolution and clustering of themes. Additionally, to understand the scientific community's trend of interest regarding specific elements of paradigms, the Keyword Trend Detection methodology was applied. The research highlighted that the implementation of Lean Production methodologies (LP) and the use of Industry 4.0 (I40) technologies provide effective support to manufacturing companies during the transition process towards the Circular Economy (CE). Furthermore, new research directions have been proposed, warranting exploration in future studies, with a focus on the interconnection between the themes of I40, LP, and CE.
