Abstract

The goal of this paper is to analyze the critical success factors of the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies in Italian manufacturing companies. The motivation is the fact that there is currently a lot of talk about companies willing to innovate in terms of new technologies, but there are very few companies that have completed this digital transformation. The research starts from a literature review with the goal of creating a list of critical success factors discovered in prior research that influence the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies in manufacturing contexts. After screening all the papers, critical success factors that had been cited in more than one document were collected in a table with relevant definitions derived from the literature. The second step has been the preparation of a survey to be sent to Italian manufacturing companies in order to understand the degree of implementation of 4.0 technologies; the CSFs just mentioned have been resized and collected into three groups which are: organizational, technological, and financial factors. After forwarding the questionnaire to about 220 companies, 25% of the companies gave positive responses; these results have been analyzed to be able to answer to 1) What is the level of conversion of Italian manufacturing companies through the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies? 2) What are the critical success factors for the adoption of Industry 4.0? What emerged from the analysis is that Big Data & Analytics, IoT, and integration are the most widely adopted technologies in the Italian enterprise today; Cybersecurity and cloud computing are also two emerging technologies that are enjoying good success in businesses, meaning that Industry 4.0. is growing strongly with new investment in the coming years. For what concerns CSFs, the ones that got the best average score are the propensity to allocate budget & resources and top management commitment. In addition, the alignment of business strategy with Industry 4.0 requirements was discovered to be more important in the real working context than in the literature. In conclusion, it was possible to notice several discrepancies from what emerged in the literature analysis and the current situation of Italian companies; however, we have a small set of data which is not representative of all the various Italian manufacturing sectors and for this reason we cannot take for granted all the assumptions.
