Today’s technical transition has a potentiallydisruptive impact on the current organisationof work. More specifically, the ubiquity ofcommunication and network technology offers anew range of possibilities for workers to choosewhen and where to work. This essay is aimed atcarrying out an in-depth analysis of some of theinnovative patterns of space and time redefinitionof work, currently spreading into specific technicaland organisational domains and occupations, foremployees and for self-employed and on-demandworkers. Such patterns increase workers’ freedomand the quality of work, and enable an improvementin work-life balance. However, on the one hand, they challenge corporate coordination and controlsystems, which are changing at a slower pace, especially as concerns performance assessment; onthe other hand, they pose serious issues for socialinstitutions and employment regulation bodies interms of job market fragmentation and pervasivesurveillance.
