The article offers a critical overview of the different reasons for the conflict between the Spanish State and Catalonia, analyzing them both historically, politically, culturally and socially speaking. The aporetic coexistence of a national power and the claim for an autonomous local government – recently ended in a declaration of self-determination without real foundations – calls for an overall change in the way of conceiving this relation, in order to avoid the perpetuation of the conflict. This different thinking implies a new federal agreement, capable of offering a flexible, and politically adequate response, to the complexity of the independence phenomenon.
