The socio-economical change in the italian society gives the opportunity to rethink the features and meanings of territorial political subculture (white and red areas). These are living a deep reshaping process. The paper examines the failure of subcultural features in the “red regions”, following the weakening of identity and organization of mainstream political party. Moving from a critique to the analysis based on electoral geography, and to the perspective that institutions move to the power steering previously exercised by the parties of the left, the author addresses the historical perspective and examines sociological and political studies of the decay of political red subculture. The author suggests the persistence of electoral stability without cultural continuity, in the context of never full accomplished modernization in Italy.
