The aim of this article is to empirically detect and compare the relevance (and forms) of the topic of globalization in right wing extremist discourse, focusing on the Italian extreme right and emphasizing similarities and differences between different types of extreme right organizations, either political parties and movements. The study is based on a frame analysis carried out on different types of organizational documents (party newspapers, monthly magazines, organizational documents, and archives of online discussion forums) over a period from 2000 to 2006 for a total of 2500 frames analysed. How important is globalization compared to other topics in the discourse of the Italian extreme right? What are the issues to which globalization is usually related (economics, politics, culture)? What are the solutions suggested by the extreme right organizations to cope with globalization? And what are the ‘enemies’ and ‘allies’ in relation to this matter? The differences in the framing strategies of different types of groups will be shown, as well as the novelty but also the non-novelty of the way in which Italian extreme right addresses the discourse on globalization with the construction of a complex identity made where traditional values and innovative elements coexist.
