Today Benjamin gives an esoteric thrill to the Marxist scholar, as Borges to the philistine bourgeois. We need to rediscover instead his utopian-subversive core, beyond the messianic suggestion and the vaporous rhetoric of nomadism. Thus enhancing, versus his ‘passive’ side (wandering aimlessly, death of intention, involuntary memory), the ‘active’ dimension of the flâneur, his selective attention and critical intelligence, the attitude to rearrange and refurbish the fragments of the urban phantasmagoria. Lost in the unlimited supply of the web, where nothing today is missed (as instead Franco Moretti thought about metropolis) because everything is filed, digitalized and preserved, the flâneur has to recover his ability to conscious and responsible choice, finding his way in the chaos and regaining his direct experience (giving it a personal meaning). If for Benjamin the chess player (historical materialism) hid the hunchbacked dwarf of the theology, today the flâneur, idle and polished dabbler of sensations, has to perform a heroic Jedi knight, an active citizen who fights a-gainst the power devices, redeeming in a shared present potentialities and lost opportunities of the past. The revolution hoped by the hypertext of Passages not as an insurrection but as a molecular creation of common spaces, self-organized, not consumption-oriented, ranging from nurseries to small organic food markets.
