Cooperatives are usually seen as a response to specific failure or an advanced form of enterprise in the advanced market economies. The history of modern cooperative movements demonstrates a poor basis in economic theory, from which strategic errors and failures, and the ethical anchorage of cooperative action. The key of the ethics of virtue is the capacity to resolve, to transcend the conflict between self interest and the interest of others. The essential difference between capitalist and cooperative enterprise is a situation in which each party pursues his own end (the capitalistic firm) and one in which a common end is shared. In other words, the interest of each one is realized together with that of each other. From the point of view of management science, the difference is between the coordination of the action of many agents and the cooperation among the people involved. Three conditions are necessary to resolve the problem of cooperation: the first is the mutual responsiveness, it is not enough that the members intend to undertake the same action, they must also want to do it together; the second is commitment to the joint activity, it is impossible to measure the specific contribution of each to the joint product; the third is commitment to mutual support, whereby each engages to help the others in their efforts to attain the best possible final result. Cooperatives try to imitate the capitalist firms’ style of governance, with a lack of consciousness of what they are and what they do. This is why we need a new or different economic theory of cooperative.
