Based on the private correspondence between the Italian genetists Adriano Buzzati-Traverso, Claudio Barigozzi and Giuseppe Montalenti, kept in Montalenti’s personal archive, this paper analyzes the organizing backstage – from 1948 to 1953 – of the Ninth International Congress of Genetics in Bellagio, on the riverside of Como’s lake (August 24-31th, 1953). In the light of these unknown documents, the international Congress of Bellagio emerges, in the history of Italian genetics, like a catalyst of the pre-existent scientific and ideological tensions, activating the process of autonomisation and internal structuring of genetics as a specific ‘scientific camp’. The final result of this difficult phase will be the birth, in 1953, of the Italian Association of Genetics.
