According to a consolidated interpretation, sacredness of life and quality of life could be regarded as the two main paradigms of contemporary bioethics, reciprocally opposing as catholic and secular ethics. The essay points out the vagueness of this interpretation through a reconstruction of the fundamental features of a protestant bioethics and a secular one. Though accepting the sacredness of life, the former does not consider this notion as absolutely bounding, while the latter recovers that same notion in a secularised perspective.
