In mature democracies, globalisation and multiculturalism mark a return to religious nationalism and determine a clash between the Rule of Law and the Rule of God. The paper analyses two multicultural experiences of religious nationalism, such as those of the United States and India. The latter are currently experiencing a season of cultural and religious nationalism that is an expression of the Majoritarian State. Ameliorative secularism and the constitutional value of fraternity, as roots of democracy, can represent a way to overcome religious nationalism and to ensure the protection of minorities, in order to avoid a short circuit in contemporary constitutionalism.
