The aim of the paper is to model the probability of dropping out university. We consider a non-parametric maximum likelihood approach in generalized linear mixed models (Aitkin, 1999) to understand the influence of educational background, personal characteristics and related attributes on individual student drop-out rate. We propose a random effects model for binary data, leaving unspecified the random effects distribution. All the parameters estimates are obtained by using the EM algorithm. The empirical data analysis is based upon a data set of approximately 6000 undergraduate students enrolled in the Economics of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" from the 2002-2003 throughout the 2004-2005 academic year.
