The essay aims to illustrate Luca Serianni’s thought, works and teaching in the most branched field of the xvii century Italian language and literature, both in verse and prose, also in relationship with the lesson of significant Masters in the history of the studies and academic criticism. For this purpose twenty-one of his contributions, of various nature and source, have been selected and read in view of attempting a delineation of his approach to the authors, texts, genres and linguistic and stylistic devices. The wish is to offer a kind of “conversation pieceµ of the long, articulated and not exclusive dialogue of the Scholar with the classical and vernacular traditions and some of the most representative literary expressions of the proteiform century.
