In the last few years, the ability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of deploying and managing innovation is a topic receiving a steadily growing academic attention. However, we still know relatively little about those factors fostering and inhibiting innovation in such firms. This study contributes to fill this gap analyzing the role of strategic networks as drivers of innovation in the specific context of micro firms. The research employs an empirical, qualitative approach based on several semi-structured interviews conducted with Italian microentrepreneurs and networks’ managers. The findings show the potential of networks as both drivers and barriers to innovation in such firms, as different network’s characteristics have different impact on the innovation potential of micro enterprises. This study contributes to the research about innovation in SMEs and joins the conversation about the role of networks for innovation in small firms
