484Artificial Intelligence has recently achieved great popularity and a pervasive impact on our lives. However, this multifaceted discipline raises many issues, such as explainability and accountability. Data privacy is another topic of debate due to the massive digitisation that all human activities have faced. In this paper, I first provide an overview of Artificial Intelligence to understand the various approaches and how different models use data, highlighting the issues raised. Then, I briefly discuss how a trade-off of regulation and research actions can address the data privacy problem. In particular, I will show how the availability of machine-readable and accessible data should not preclude concepts such as data protection and data sovereignty and how technological solutions can help preserve privacy and obfuscate the real identity of the subject to whom the data refers.
