Croce is a thinker who has always emphasized the universal value of the “workµ, placing it before that of its individual ownership and belonging. However, he has also always cultivated an interest in biographism and even in autobiography. What is the ground into which take their roots these two mental dispositions, apparently in contradiction with each other? An existential ground, a historical ground or a philosophical ground? The contribution doesn’t aims to unravel the problem: instead to answer this question univocally, it aims rather to focus on the psychologically complex and conceptually “slipperyµ relationship between life – individual and historical experiences, cultural and emotional reactions of the author to events of his existence in the context of those of his own time – and the speculative engagement. All this unitedly to the attempt to adapt his experiences to his thought but also this to life and history happenings, keeping, at the same time, faithful and fruitfully unfaithful to himself
