Following the discussion that Croce and Gentile undertook between 1907 and 1908 on a review of Gentile on Karl Vossler’s Dante, the essay goes back to the origin of the two philosophers’ reflection on Dante’s poetry. In these letters, through a close comparison with desanctisian criticism, problems emerge that will remain central in the neo-idealistic reading of the Poet: the relationship between the intellectual element and poetry, the aesthetic evaluation of Paradiso, the essence of allegory.
