In recent years the touristification of Latin American urban heritage hasdemanded important material and symbolic transformations, which haverequired interventions in public spaces and buildings of heritage value, aswell as adjustments to public policies. All this to make the cities more attractivefor cultural tourism. Several authors point out that this fact has causedthe displacement of low-income groups, and the loss of popular uses andtraditional practices is less attractive for tourism. This paper constitutes abrief description of this phenomenon and of representative case studies.
