Starting from his 2009 paper on «Psychiatry and the Concept of Disease as Pathology», our contribution discusses Dominic Murphy's advocacy of the so-called «strong medical model». Murphy argues that psychiatric disorders are caused by specific physiopathological processes in the brain, and psychiatric categories can be characterized on this basis. With the aim of taking into proper account scientific research and its achievements, and enhancing the scientific status of psychiatry itself, Murphy considers the strong medical model a key model to address both nosographic and explanatory issues. Our paper points out a few epistemological tensions in Murphy's account, which we believe rests on disputable and opaque assumptions and ultimately proves far from disentangling mutual relations between classifications and explanations of psychiatric diseases.
