The mountainous area occupy one third of Romania’s territory and are considered the last wild area of Europe, given their rich biodiversity and untouched ecosystem. But from a demographical point of view, already less populated than the rest of the country for the past decades, mountainous regions are continuously loosing inhabitants. So what should be done in order to stop this exodus of energy and dynamism to make people return living in these areas? The article passes in review the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of these territories in order to set the scene; then it conveys some examples of initiatives which are being taken in order to enhance the regional development in these territories. The motivations of people living in the territory or who moved back are also presented. Despite remoteness and economic difficulties, Carpathians are presented as territories of the future which combine untouched culture, high quality food with last technologies and high speed of internet. Surprising territories, home to happy, dynamic people.
