Originally, the term “crisis” referred to a choice to make in a difficult moment. On the contrary, in the common language this term is used in a more reductive sense: the one of loss, distress, imbalance. To explain this shift in the original meaning, this paper hypothesizes that over the last centuries – those of Modernity – and especially over the last decades, the material and immaterial precarization of individual and social life, along with the increasing uncertainty and vulnerability associated to choices (which individuals are continually called to make, often without anchorages) made social action and social relations so unstable and “critical” that every crisis, even those with a positive result, originates losses and deprivations. This justifies the conceptual shift above mentioned.
