August of 2009 witnessed the death of Giovanni Jervis, one of the most renowned Italian intellectuals of the late 20th century. A psychiatrist as well as a psychologist, he taught dynamic psychology at the Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza. Working together with Ernesto De Martino and later Franco Basaglia, Jervis played a leading role in the important developments in Italian psychiatry in the 1960s and 70s. This interview is a tribute to him, as well as an opportunity to examine some themes regarding psychiatry and the history of this field.
