In Italy, the dental profession has only recently gained recognition as a result of the alignment of national laws with European Union legislation, after a gestation that can reasonably be traced back to the Middle Ages. Lagging behind its sister profession medicine, dentistry represented a profitable business for charlatans and quacks who, not yet totally disappeared, hampered the physiological development of the dental profession. Believing that, particularly at this historical moment, knowledge of the tormented history of dentistry can contribute to the profession’s thriving growth, the authors examine its development in Italy in the light of the more general European context.
