Iacobi Gervasis Medici Physici Bellunensis Consiliorum Medicorum Collectio is an unpublished manuscript of about a hundred consilia, written between 1626 and 1649. During that period Giacomo Gervasis worked in Belluno, in the Venetian Terraferma, as a public doctor and was helped by his colleague Francesco Mistruzzi and other physicians of Padua and Venice through the practice of written consultations. The manuscript records the various types of illness with which the two physicians dealt and also the identity of their patients. Following the traditional structure of the consilia, the causes of disease were investigated and the most appropriate treatements were suggested, such as electuaries, syrups, pills and lenitives. The most fashionable cure was the purge, which was a real therapy, often lasting for months, and its aim was to purify the body. The preliminary part of the purge consisted of blood- letting, followed by infusions, purifying waters and distillates of herbs and then clysters, a special diet and even periodic vomiting after meals. Finally, as preventative therapy, periodical administration of medicaments was recommended.
