Information on pharmacies in the early modern period is relatively scarce especially when one considers those located in small to medium sized towns. This article aims at providing a more complete picture of the pharmaceutical culture in border areas such as the Trentino in the late 17 and early 18th centuries. The point of departure will be the treatises on the preparation of drugs preserved in three “spezierie” (pharmacies), especially the one owned by Antonio Crivelli in the city of Trento. It is impossible to reach any comprehensive and wide-ranging conclusions from these rather modest collections of books; nonetheless, the existence of books on chemical pharmacy proves that also in Trento at the end of the 17th century this new approach was current alongside the Galenic tradition. Moreover, this article shows how the physicians and apothecaries who wrote these texts aimed not only to provide pharmacists with a “scientific” education, but also to redefine their ‘art’ and in this way provide the idea of an ideal apothecary, both of which were used as models to regulate pharmacists and their trade.
