Muratori’s interest in medicine left a remarkable track in his work. He devo- ted with relevant competence to three subjects: the rules to be observed to impede the propagation of plague; the peculiarity of being a good physician; the various diseases of imagination. Being sensible about the difficulties and the discomforts of the lowly and indigent levels of society, he was allured by medicine as much as operative knowledge able to assuage suffering and decisively contribute to ‘common happiness’. Dealing with imagination and madness, he upheld the thesis that imagination is a material faculty, and clearly reached the quite legitimate conclusion – from a philosophical standpoint – of a materialistic solution to the problem of the relation of mind and body.
