Antonio Vallisneri (1661-1730) was a doctor and natural scientist with a European reputation, as reflected in his correspondence with scientists and academies of his day. His medical practice is well documentated in his numerous consulti or consultations which circulated in northern Italy during the first thirty years of the XVIII century. These consulti appear in a variety of forms from brief notes, manuscripts and other unpublished writings, to well articulated and developed texts, both in manuscript form or published postumously in 1733. In his therapeutic prescriptions Vallisneri made use of collections of both others and of his own. The overall picture of Vallisneri’s pharmacology is varied and stratified on a number of levels. The point of departure is the theoretical rules of the art assigned to medicine: the aim of the art of medicine is the cure, even outside the academic world. In consequence Vallisneri dealt with diverse aspects of pharmacology linked to the social status of patient. He adopted remedies and curious popular practices, whose ‘scientific’ nature was without any theoretical basis, to common remedies belonging to the lingua franca of established therapy, to very elaborate and costly medicines prepared in the ‘laboratory’ of the apothecary’s shop. The type of discorse which accompanied the prescription was linked to the complexity of the preparation of the recipe and the text and the remedy varied according to the social status of the recipient.
