An efficient and sustainable water management in agriculture, the main user of the resource in southern Europe, is a goal of the 2000/60/EC Directive, known as Water Framework Directive (WFD), which defines the basic principles of water policy in the European Union. Climate change makes intervention urgent and complex. The paper presents a case study related to a pilot area located in the North of Italy in the Trebbia River Basin. Water is becoming a critical issue in the basin, where up to a recent past the resource has been abundant, due to changes in climate, rain distribution and socio-economic conditions. Water saving represents now a major problem, since conflicts among uses and environmental pressures have reached a critical level. In the basin a reorganisation of the water management system is foreseen to couple with regional and national implementation of WFD. The case study offers insight in water management in rural area characterized by an active agriculture and seasonality in water availability, a common situation in Mediterranean region.
