The sudden increases in food commodity prices during the past few years show no sign of abating. This has generated a widespread climate of uncertainty regarding future market trends, prompting international institutions to raise the alarm. This paper explores the possible effects that a food price surge could have on welfare in a least developed country. We exploit household data from a Sub-Saharan country survey to estimate a demand system and use it to simulate price scenarios for the main staple food and their possible effects upon different population categories. In our demand system, we address the possible selection bias due to non-consumption of a particular staple among households. The approach increases the reliability of our technique. Our results show that while the vast majority of urban households experience a net income loss for any increase in the maize price, rural households may benefit from higher maize price with redistributive effects towards the poor.
