Recent surveys suggest that public perception of biotechnologies results from complex psychological processes where individuals express their own personal feelings rather than simple rational market needs. Thus, deep understanding of citizen-consumer reactions to the introduction of GM products and the ability to properly interpret the motivations behind such responses are crucial for institutions wanting to govern innovation democratically and efficiently. This review describes the perspectives offered by Discrete Choice Methodology to correctly identify the principal factors on which public perception of agrobiotechnologies is built. The methodology is useful in identifying the trade-offs that consumers make in Concrete Choice (purchase) decisions. The assumption is that people purchase goods or services that maximize their utility by comparing the costs and benefits of each alternative. The final choice is predicted be the one for which the consumer has the highest willingness to pay. Information on final purchase decisions seems to be associated with individual feelings towards specific attributes of goods or services. Similarly, the Discrete Choice Methodology can be used to thoroughly analyze citizen-consumer decisions either when GMOs attributes are considered as part of a product or when they are the target of an institution’s safety policies.
