The article discusses agricultural risk management and the role of public support. The main tenet is that the changing scenario that is investing European agriculture, determined by the joint effects of the CAP reform and the evolution of international markets, it is not sufficient to justify increased financial support to traditional income stabilization and support programs. Making reference to the change in the way in which corporations in various countries have integrated their activities in the financial markets, and by surveying the instruments provided by those markets, we discuss the prospects for agricultural risk management based on a renewed concept of mutuality and the relative potential role of the State in the post-CAP reform Europe.
