According to the generally accepted opinion, to "priscae Latinae coloniae" are referred those establishments made by the Latin league, with more or less participation of Rome, previous to the year 338 b.C., and which would serve as a model for the later Latin colonies. However, the analysis of the known cases shows how the colony concept previous to that date is used by the Ancients in a very ambiguous way, applied to situations of a very diverse nature, and not always to a true colonization.
