354This text features authors and works until now rather neglected by the philosophical critic. My aim is to examine some historical, theatrical and literary works - differently connected with Spinoza, Amsterdam and the Dutch Golden Age - such as defended the liberty and the liberties of Modern citizens against tyranny (monarchy) and censure. As cultural background of several great philosophical ideas, I introduce different sources that are at the roots of modern society and modern State with their thick problems: the nature of democracy and of freedom, the relationship between social changes and State's settlement, citizenship and immigration, and the political use of art and public communication.
