Two different approaches to the examination of the language-cognition interface are introduced: the traditional,representational-disembodied view and a functional view. An instance of the type of paradoxes that can arise form a traditional view are presented and how they can be resolved from a functional view - that regards language as a tool to extend cognition by driving attention - is presented. Implications for comparative research across linguistic communities are presented.
