In 2021, Belarus adopted aggressive policies of instrumentalization of migratory flows, causing a humanitarian crisis at the borders of the European Union. The Belarusian government facilitated new migration routes to the neighbouring countries of Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland to destabilize the European Union and its Member States. This paper assesses the EU normative response from a fundamental rights perspective to understand where to strike a balance between safeguarding borders and protecting the migrants affected.
