380Sub-state nationalist parties of Western Europe occupy different positions along the left-right political spectrum, adopting different ideological identities. Through an historical analysis of the political evolution of the Scottish National Party from 1934 until 21st century, this article aims to bring to light the intrinsic connection between the socio-economic framework of Scotland and the ideological evolution of political nationalism. The socio-structural characteristics of the regions are particularly useful to explain, in a historical perspective, why in heavily industrialised and unionised areas sub-state nationalism turns towards the left, showing also its ability to combine with different ideologies.
