Fiume’s experience was one of the postwar international events that arose more interest andpassions in Spain, following the polarization that the Great War entailed. But it was also the objectof criticism, concern and even ridicule. This paper examines the impact that Fiume had onthe Spanish and Catalan public opinion. Further, it analyses the influence that this experiencehad over the multiple processes of radicalization and political mobilization that took place inSpain during the period 1919-1920, either as an exemplary model or as an object of rejection.
