This essay concernsthe participation of foreign citizens among d’Annunzio’s volunteers. Through the analysis ofthe irredentist press, archives of d’Annunzio’s army and private memories, the paper examinesthe presence of foreign legionaries and how it influenced the international echo of the «Fiumeexploit». The cases analyzed reveal a small participation of non-Italian volunteers, whose experienceswas nevertheless combined with those of journalists, intellectuals and activists, creatingthe image of a cosmopolitan rebellion. The idealized image of the «foreign legionnaire»therefore appears as a myth with a significant influence on memories and historiography.
