Indonesia has guaranteed religious freedom since its founding in 1945; it was strengthened after the 1998 transition to democracy. Yet the shape of religious freedom is determined very much by the historically rooted paradigm of religious governance which puts an emphasis on harmony rather than freedom. The fact that Indonesia is a Muslim majority country also shows how Islamic politics leaves its significant marks on many aspects of religious freedom.
