This article discusses the concept of religious neutrality in western democracies with a focus on Germany. After briefly outlining the past development and use of this term, it defines neutrality as a complex of normative ideals to resolve religious-ideological conflicts. It assesses the compatibility of that concept with a growing Islam and argues to neither abandon nor overstretch it but consequently apply the approved system under altered circumstances.
