The increasing number of IS "foreign terrorist fighters" has led the Security Council to adopt Resolution 2178/2014 to encourage the national implementation of a wide range of preventive and repressive measures. However, the need to protect international security has often provoked the violation of the foreign terrorist fighters' human rights and fundamental freedoms as well as the breach of international law standards. A relevant example of such a situation is represented by the deprivation of citizenship, which could infringe the individual right to a nationality. By taking into account the principle of complementary and mutual reinforcement between human rights and international security, this comment will focus on the legitimacy of the withdrawal of citizenship on the basis of the prohibition of arbitrary deprivation of nationality, the principle of non-discrimination and the avoidance of statelessness.
