228Wine Routes in Abruzzo: a missed opportunity for regional development and
promotion
The study of Wine Routes deals with a complex and multidimensional process of
local development, including agricultural, tourism and ecological aspects of the
territory.
Wine routes internalize territorial values for several reasons: they express the
systemic connections between places and players in the region; they are able to
territorialize the image of quality and the typicality of wine industry (often acting as
niche segment capable to represent the agricultural “made in” of the region); they
contribute to preserve territorial identity and to prevent cultural homologation.
Nonetheless, in Abruzzo the development process Wine Routes should have started
have remained at a potential stage as a consequence of poor complementarity
between public and private sectors, weak cooperation among wine producers,
substantial inability of local stakeholders to share a common vision on strategic
planning
