Tourism plays a crucial role in the competitiveness of rural areas rurali (Briedenhann, Wickens, 2004; Esposti, 2006; European Commission, 2007) especially where tourism demand is linked to the quality of the environmental and cultural heritage (Butler, Hall, 1998) and of the gastronomical capital (Cupo, 2003; Forleo, 2007; Idda, 2001; Malevolti, 2003). Natural resources’ characterisation could significantly affects tourism development in the rural areas (Forleo, Mastronardi, 2008). In this sense, landscape - to be intended as primary good or complementary one (Gregori, Piccinini, 2004) - is a key factor for the territorial reorganisation and competitiveness (Marangon, 2006; Brunori, Pieroni, 2006). By mean of using GIS research techniques, our paper analyses the spatial correlation among landscape characterisation and tourism development at municipality level (municipalities of the Campobasso province). The main findings are related with the local identification of the greatest environmental value areas. The evidence provides analytical support for the policy level aimed at supporting tourism development aimed at sustainability by taking the advantage of the existing nexus between landscape and quality of tourism.
