The agro-cultural tourism systems.Territorial configurations and competitive strategies. - Rural tourism is a widespread phenomenon in Italy and yet it quite rarely reaches that size and that quality needed to become a driving force for the development of rural economy and of an innovative and multifunctional agriculture. Only 12.6% out of the 3.672 municipalities where farmhouses can be found have an accommodation capacity of more than 100 beds. Starting from the analysis of the accommodation capacity of Italian municipalities and of the weight that farmhouses have within it, the paper identifies the geographical areas where rural tourism has a significant and distinctive role. By comparing these results with the attractiveness factors of every single rural area, we outline some potential competitive orientations which tourism tends to take in these areas as well as the specific characteristics of agro-cultural tourism systems, meant as those territorial contexts where a synergistic and interactive link between tourism and territory is established and where the attractiveness of the area is deeply connected to its rural culture in its multiple facets.
