The election of Benedetto Conforti as member of the European Commission of Human Rights in 1993 and then as a judge of the European Court of Human Rights in 1998. His approach to this new endeavour: humanism and legal rigour. Conforti's positions on a number of relevant issues as emerging from his separate opinions, in particular in respect of inhuman or degrading punishments, fair trial, protection of private and family life, freedom of thought, conscience and religion, freedom of expression, freedom of association, protection of property and right to free elections.
