Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to give more insight into virtual organization and try to measure the degree of virtual organizing of the businesses. In order to understand the degree of virtualness one should analyze factors influencing this phenomenon. The suggested theoretical content of the paper is the following: 1.Definition of virtual organization: Terminology. 2.Theoretical models that explain this phenomenon a.The model of Imaginary organization by Hedberg et al. (Virtual Organizations and Beyond: Discover Imaginary Systems). The model focuses on the structure of the organization and the processes and relationships between the inloved parties. . b.The approach of virtual organizing by Venkatraman and Henderson (Real Strategies for Virtual Organization), which deals with the strategy of virtual organizing. c. Combination of these two models will create a complete picture of the phenomenon of virtual organization and, therefore, factors can be built based on both theoretical approaches. 3.Factors influencing the degree of virtual organization As a case study, the author decided to use Borsa Italiana S.p.A. and identify what would be the degree of virtualness in this organization. The target is to identify how the above mentioned factors are applicable in Borsa Italiana S.p.A. and create clear guidance for other companies who would use the concept of virtual organization in their businesses. In conclusion the issue of trust came out as one of the major factors in virtual organizations, especially the nature of trust to resourcing partners. An important element of that are personal relationships at first, which are necessary to be backed up by legal contracts. In fact, for Borsa Italiana S.p.A., the future presents one principal risk: a loss of trust by the general public. A high degree of trust is important, since the Italian Stock Exchange fulfills a number of important public functions, therefore, the need for responsible ownership in clear.
