Abstract

This thesis aims to contribute to the existing literature on the management of change by providing new insights to both decision makers and researchers. After an initial literature review of the theories and perspectives that have contributed to identify the available approaches to change, the paper embraces the “Choice” perspective, a view firstly proposed by Burnes (2004). Burnes goes against the deterministic fashion that characterise the available approaches to change management by arguing that decision makers do have latitude of action in this regard, rejecting the prescriptions proposed by the existing theories. It is after this first consideration that the researcher seeks to apply the “Choice” perspective to a new field, the change agency. The topic has been selected due to its relevance in the successful management of change, increasingly highlighted by the academia. Moreover, the situation concerning the available models of change agency strongly resembles the one previously described in the case of the existing approaches to change, a context where each of the theories advocates for a different (and best) type of change agent. With the goal of enhancing the visibility of both decision makers and researchers on the available options, the thesis proposes an innovative link between the change approaches and change agency models. The author, adopting a constructionist approach, bridges the two topics, paving the way for the application of the “Choice” perspective to the change agency field, encountering a breeding ground for the application of this view from the analysis of a case study.
