Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to present and analyze a product certification process called “G-Mark Certification” as it is performed in a Multinational certification company, UL International, in order to find where and how it can be improved. The G-Mark certification is a requisite for some products categories to access the Persian Gulf countries’ market. It is quite new as it was introduced in 2016, in the same year UL obtained the accreditation to issue G-Mark certificates. The process itself has mostly remained unchanged throughout these years. However, the experience now gained with the process and the customers’ feedbacks offer the possibility and the necessity to improve it. The goal of this intervention is to enhance the costumer experience by offering a revised version of the process in which the time needed to obtain the certification has been reduced by 30% and the project management has been simplified. On the other hand, this activity wants to be an opportunity to make the handling of G-Mark projects easier for UL’s employees by eliminating tasks and documents that are not currently bringing any added value to the costumers. The improvements to the process have been performed through the application of the Lean approach and the use of the Lean tools that have been found to be most suitable to this case. After the case presentation and the description of the G-Mark regulation, thanks also to a thorough literature review, the PDCA Cycle has been applied as a method to develop the process improvement. After the application of the PDCA Cycle, the comparison between the As-Is and To-Be processes shows if the goals set have been reached and what could be further improved in the next Cycles. The comparison has been performed by collecting the data that better describes the process. In conclusion, it has been shown how the improvements made were consistent with what has been analyzed in the literature review.
