Abstract

The aim of this paper is to research the effectiveness of global leadership development programmes in the real business world, by verifying their presence in companies that operate in the international context. The idea expressed throughout the progression of the work is that nowadays global leadership competencies are essential for the success of multinational corporations. The most suitable and recognised practices for the development of the required skills are international assignments, participation in global teams, sustainable development, and cross-cultural sensitivity training. After analysing the evolution of leadership from the 1930s, and after describing global leadership development, the four variables have been implemented in a conceptual framework useful to define the object and the research questions of the project. Then, a qualitative analysis has been applied in order to answer the proposed questions about the effectiveness of global leadership development programmes in realities that operate in the international context. To do so, a semi-structured interview has been chosen as methodology, and conducted by involving two global leaders that work for multinational enterprises: Nico Delvaux, President and CEO at ASSA ABLOY, and Andrea Prestigiacomo, Licensing Brand Manager at Roberto Cavalli. In the first analysed case, the results of the empirical study revealed that the presence of training and development programmes for global leaders is considered effective and influential for the growth of managers, teams and the company itself. Conversely, in the second case, their absence is considered as one of the causes that led to the reorganisation of the company. It would be best if both companies would focus more on their sustainable and ethical aspects, since the self-development of a globally responsible and mindful leadership contributes to the sustainable growth of organisations. The results of the research contributed to the literature of the development of global leaders, however they cannot be generalised because they come out from a qualitative methodology that refers specifically to the cases analysed. In addition, the results obtained refer to a sample which, for reasons of time, is made up of only two candidates. This limitation can be easily overcome in the future by switching to a quantitative approach of the empirical study. To do so, a newly structured interview can be administered to a greater number of candidates, in order to expand the research range, as well as the cultural context, and increase the reliability of the results obtained. Similarly, a Likert scale questionnaire could be created in order to investigate the level of effectiveness of global leadership development in other realities.
