This paper investigates the reaction of active union members towards workplace organisational changes. We use micro-data from a large firm and estimate an empirical model which deals explicitly with the potential endogeneity of the union activist status. The data indicate that workers who become union activists are more likely to complain relative to members. Moreover, after a proper allowance has been made for the endogeneity of union activism, we find this effect to reinforce. This result suggests that the pool of activists is inherently more favourable to organisational changes compared to activist and that they report higher dissatisfaction as a mean of using their "voice" to reinforce their bargaining position in negotiations.
